JOB TITLE: Director of Children’s Services, Grade 30
LOCATION: Headquarters Library
DATE AVAILABLE: May 1, 2026
SALARY: $61,754 per year (Includes generous benefits package)

HOURS: 40 hours per week

Monday through Friday 8:30am to 5:30pm

(Note: Must be flexible to accommodate last-minute schedule changes for the Children's Department staffing needs.)



EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: • Master’s Degree in Library Science from an accredited ALA library school with comprehensive knowledge of Children’s Services in a public library and three years of supervisory experience Must pass pre-employment testing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Stays informed of the needs and interests of families and children, birth through age twelve, through library patron interactions and reading of current journals, websites and literature to ensure creative and innovative programs that meet the needs of children
  • Develop objectives and key results for Children’s Services for the SCPL system
  • Clearly communicates SCPL’s philosophy of Children’s Services and Palmetto Basics concepts to staff
  • Supervises and interviews all staff within the Children’s Department
  • Regularly meets with librarians and children assistants around the system to provide guidance and help with planning to ensure attractive, dynamic, welcoming programs and spaces for children at all locations
  • Chairs the Children’s Services Committee, leading conversations about services for children, soliciting feedback and providing opportunities for sharing and staff development training
  • Oversee the Children’s Services programming budget that covers Summer Reading, Palmetto Basics and Children’s programming for Headquarters
  • Prepares monthly, quarterly and annual reports related to programming and budgets for children
  • Build community relationships, attending meetings and connecting with local services for children outside of the library
  • Stays current on literature for children keeping up with trends and providing input to the Youth Services Collection Development Librarian
  • Represents SCPL at conferences and attends conferences, training and social events related to Children to remain current on local and national discussions related to Children’s Services


KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
  • Master’s Degree in Library Science from an accredited ALA library school with comprehensive knowledge of Children’s Services in a public library and three years of supervisory experience
  • Comprehensive knowledge of children’s literature
  • Thorough knowledge of professional library principles, procedures, materials and practices with three years of public library experience and supervisory experience
  • Forward-thinking with the drive to set and accomplish objectives and key results for strong Children’s Services throughout the library system
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient with technology
  • Ability to establish deadlines, monitor progress, and work well with a team
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
  • SCPL uses multi-factor authentication for network and program access. Employees may be required to use their personal device for MFA.
  • Driver’s license valid in the State of South Carolina with the ability to drive to other libraries or community outreach
